The great annual migration of millions of zebra, wildebeest
antelope in East Africa tops almost every list of safari
experiences. This mass exodus of 1.5 million wildebeest
together with 500,000 zebra and gazelle on their eternal
search for water and greener pastures is one of the greatest
natural spectacles on Earth.
When the dry season arrives around June, the grasses are
exhausted and the wildebeest head to permanent water.
Forming columns which stretch for miles, the wildebeest are
joined by zebra and other hoofed animals start their long
trek from Tanzania's Serengeti Plains, they travel north to
Kenya's Masai Mara Reserve, until they reach food and
water. Their journey runs in a clockwise circle and the
animals cover a distance of around 1800 miles.
One of the most spectacular sights of the migration is when
the herds gather to cross the Grumeti River in Tanzania and
the Mara River in Kenya. As the herds cross, crocodiles are
lying in wait for the weak and feeble they migratory animals
are therefore very nervous and skittish.
