The beautiful iridescent plumage of the kingfisher makes it
one of our most colourful and instantly recognisable birds;
despite this it is rarely seen due to its shy nature.
The Kingfisher occurs throughout most of Europe but,
absent from colder regions including Northern Scotland.
The preferred habitat is along slow-flowing rivers and
streams. During the winter it can occasionally be seen by
the sea coasts and around estuaries where the water
doesn’t ice over.
Easily identified the Kingfisher has brilliant blue-green
upper parts and rich amber/chestnut under parts. It has a
white throat and white neck patch just below the eye.
I saw these two together at Brockenhurst in the New Forest
in the Spring and was immediately inspired to paint them.
