The world's largest living land mammals are best known for
their huge size, social behaviour, unique tusks and longevity.
African elephants live wherever they can find enough food and
water with minimal disturbance from people. Most of Africa's
elephants live on open savannahs and in dry woodlands. In
some regions, they occur in desert areas; in others, they are
found in mountains.
Elephants are capable of making low frequency sounds that are
below the human range of hearing, this allows wandering
individuals within the herd as well as several different herds to
stay in direct contact over distances of many miles. They are
gentle, intelligent creatures and live for up to 70 years.
Elephants develop a vast memory learned from the wiser, more
experienced members of the herd. They will learn where to find
water in a drought, which regions of their range will provide the
best food at a given time of year and, they will travel along
trails through the bush that have been handed down from
generation to generation. Having gained this vast knowledge, it
is believed that the Elephant is probably the wisest creature in
the animal kingdom.
