Tiger Fury
Tigers are the largest cats in the world. They live in
steamy hot jungles as well as icy cold forest habitats.
There are five different kinds or subspecies of Tiger alive
in the world today. Unlike some big cats like Lions, adult
Tigers prefer to live alone (except for mothers with
cubs). This is partly because in the forest, a single Tiger
can sneak up and surprise its prey better than a group
of Tigers can. Big cats that inhabit jungles, like Tigers,
Jaguars and Leopards have adapted to have the white
spots on the backs of their ears to make it easier for
cubs to follow mother through the forest in the gloomy
darkness.
When you have a wild Tiger look you straight in the eyes
from a few feet away from the back of an open jeep as I
have, you feel a shiver up your back when you realise
how insignificant and vulnerable you are - I could almost
feel what he was thinking. From the intensity of his
gaze, it can be seen that Tiger’s fear nothing. As they
say, the eyes are the windows of the soul.
Easily recognized by it’s reddish-orange coat with black
stripes, the Tiger is the largest of the world’s big cats.
Highly adaptable, Tigers range from the forests of
Siberia, to open grassland and the tropical mangrove
swamps of India. They are territorial and generally
solitary animals, often requiring large territorial areas of
habitat that support their prey demands.
They have featured prominently in ancient mythologies
and folklore, and continue to be depicted in modern
films and literature. Tigers appear on many flags, and
are wanted as mascots for sporting teams and serve as
the national animal of several Asian nations.
No matter what the culture or language, the Tiger is
regarded as the undisputed ruler of its domain and it
has had a profound influence on village life in Asia over
the centuries. In popular belief the Tiger is the oldest
inhabitant of the jungle, living there long before humans
came. People working in their gardens or in the forest
do not dare to call the big cat by its common name.
Instead they use respectful titles like 'grandfather or
grandmother in-the forest,' 'old man of the forest’, or
'king of the forest.'
