White Magic
The world's most enchanting animal is the White Tiger. The
first was captured in 1951 in a forest owned by his Highness
The Maharajah of Rewa, in the forests adjoining the
Bandhavgarh National Park. It was a chance discovery. The
cub was in a litter of four cubs which walked into a forest
camp. The word went around of this amazing discovery and
the Maharajah had the white cub brought to his palace
where the cub was reared.
As beautiful as it may look, life as a White Tiger can't be
easy when your life depends on being able to disappear into
and keep a low profile when stalking through the dappled
light of the jungle, this is possibly one of the reasons that
white cubs are so rare in the wild.
The White Tiger now only survives in the world’s zoos, but I
wanted to paint this stunning, magnificent animal in it’s
natural forest habitat, as the white coat stands out against
the dark, cool forest pool.
Tigers may love water, but they do not like to get it in their
eyes and will frequently enter backwards to ensure this
doesn't happen. When emerging they'll often shake like a
dog to remove the excess water from their coats. Drenching
and drying keeps Tigers cool during the hottest part of the
day. They follow a pattern of soaking for about an hour, then
returning to dry land where the wind will have a cooling
effect on the wet body. As the benefits start to wear off they
once more return for another cooling soak.
