African elephants once lived throughout Africa; they now inhabit no
more than one-third of the continent and are gone from the
Sahara. Over the past 150 years, ivory hunters have ruthlessly
hunted them for their tusks.
African elephants live wherever they can find enough food and
water with minimal disturbance from people, where they are
disturbed by humans they can become very agitated. Most of the
continent's elephants live on savannahs and in dry woodlands. In
some regions, they occur in desert areas; in others, they are found
in mountains. In Congo and other equatorial countries, forest
elephants live in dense tropical rainforest.
An elephant's trunk is an amazing structure, it is actually a long
nose used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking, and also
for grabbing things—especially a potential meal. The trunk alone
contains about 100,000 different muscles. African elephants have
two finger-like features on the end of their trunk that they can use
to grab small items.
